Raw Steel

Our Raw finish is cleaned bare American steel with the natural appearance of freshly milled metal, similar to a shiny new nickel.

Because this is untreated steel, it will naturally develop a patina and eventually rust over time when exposed to moisture and the elements. The speed and appearance of this process depends on your local climate and environment.

If you’d like to preserve its bright metallic appearance, we recommend applying a clear protective coating, such as Rust-Oleum® Clear Coat, after receiving your piece.

Naturally Rusted Steel

Our Naturally Rusted finish features genuine rust that begins in our workshop before your garden stake arrives.

Each piece develops its own unique character, ranging from warm reddish-brown tones to deeper earthy browns with occasional orange highlights. These natural variations are created by the steel itself and seasonal weather conditions, making every piece truly one of a kind.

Because this is real rust—not paint or powder coating—it may transfer to hands or nearby surfaces until sealed.

If you’d like to preserve the finish after receiving your piece, simply apply a clear protective coating. Otherwise, it will continue to weather naturally and develop additional character over time.

We intentionally do not seal our rusted pieces because every gardener has their own vision of the perfect patina.

Every Dirt Rd. Gardener piece begins as a sheet of American steel in our family workshop in Michigan. We personally design, CNC plasma cut, weld, finish, inspect, and carefully package every order by hand.
