A garden visitor to enjoy from every side

Two perched cardinals and leafy branches give this tall steel luminary a welcoming, nature-inspired character. The design is cut through the steel on all four sides, creating genuine open spaces through which the internal solar light shines. The birds are cutout artwork, not painted red shapes.

Set it beside an entryway planter, along a garden path, or near your favorite porch chair. Evergreen boughs and red berries make lovely companions for a Yuletide display, while hydrangeas, hostas, and cottage plantings carry the bird motif into the growing season. It is a thoughtful handmade gift for bird lovers, cottage gardeners, and anyone who enjoys a quiet outdoor gathering space. Styling accessories are not included.

Lasting steel, replaceable solar lighting

Our AWS-qualified welders join four matching steel panels to create the luminary body. Its bottom remains open. A custom top cap is built to fit the inside dimensions and welded into place for a flush-mounted fitted lid. The included solar light drops into an opening in this cap; the light itself is not welded in.

If the light is damaged or eventually wears out, it can be removed and replaced without replacing the steel luminary. The steel body remains the long-term decorative structure. Position the solar panel where it can receive sunlight; charging conditions affect light output and operating time.

Choose your finish

Raw: Raw steel as it comes from the steel mill, cleaned before shipment but otherwise unfinished and unsealed. It is not painted, sealed, coated, or protected. Raw steel naturally oxidizes and develops rust and patina over time. The speed and appearance vary with weather, humidity, atmosphere, handling, and display conditions.

Rusted — The Dirt Road Gardener signature hand-rusted finish: Genuine rust, not paint, faux rust, powder coating, or a printed finish. We begin the rusting process by hand using ordinary household ingredients including vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and salt. The steel is intentionally left unsealed so it can continue aging naturally.

Unsealed rust may transfer to hands, clothing, walls, flooring, furniture, or other surfaces it touches. Color, texture, and rust patterns vary and will continue developing into a deeper patina. These variations are part of the character of genuine weathered steel. If you love the finish as it arrives and want to slow further oxidation, you may choose to apply an appropriate clear protective coating after receiving it. Listing images show the Rusted finish.

Production and free shipping

Every luminary is handmade to order according to your selected specifications. Standard production time is 7–10 business days and is separate from carrier transit time. Shipping is always free to the customer. We use UPS whenever it can deliver to your physical address; if UPS cannot service your address, we may use USPS instead.

Returns, refunds, and order concerns

Because our pieces are handmade to order and produced according to customer-selected specifications, returns and refunds are not accepted. If your order arrives damaged, is incorrect, or fails to arrive, contact The Dirt Road Gardener within 7 days so we can review the situation and work toward an appropriate resolution together. Resolution may vary with the situation; an automatic refund is not promised.
